Peer Education

Peer education engages students to take an active role in making a positive impact on health and well-being at Brown.

Peer Education Programs

Brown Transforming Exploring and Affirming Masculinities (B-TEAM) is a program for Brown students who want to promote healthier notions of masculinity on campus. The program focuses on foundational concepts like: unpacking gender norms; exploring male privilege; cultivating empathy; and acknowledging harm and promoting healing.
The Brown University Relaxation Project, affectionately known as BURP, is a group of students dedicated to promoting stress relief and relaxation to the Brown community. They have been trained by a licensed massage therapist to give stress-relieving shoulder rubs.
SAPE was created to provide an opportunity for students to play a meaningful role in moving Brown toward a culture of consent. SAPE is one of the prominent prevention programs addressing these issues on Brown’s campus.
SHAG is a peer education program for Brown students who are interested in promoting sexual health. Peer Educators are trained in current sexual health knowledge and effective approaches to sexual health education. Members of SHAG facilitate workshops in conjunction with Health Education staff and also participate in sexual health outreach projects through Health Promotion.
WPE in BWell serve as leaders and role models, dedicated to the collaborative development and delivery of health interventions that support students’ overall wellbeing. Using motivational interviewing and facilitation skills, WPEs establish and maintain deep community connections that facilitate the creation and implementation of initiatives that allow for the sharing of gifts and wellbeing practices with others.

Our peer education groups—B-TEAM, Sexual Assault Prevention Education (SAPE), Sexual Health Awareness Group (SHAG), and the Wellness Peer Educators—offer engaging, interactive sessions that provide accurate health information in a non-judgmental and inclusive way.

  • The fastest way to request a program is to submit a workshop request form.
  • During short breaks between semesters, when the workshop request form is not available, or if you have questions, please email bwell@brown.edu.

BWell Student Employment and Volunteer Positions

Being a part of BWell was the most impactful experience of my time at Brown. I have ... deep gratitude for the work we’ve done together. BWell developed my values and skills in immeasurable ways. I owe so much of what I am capable of to the support, mentorship, and community I found at BWell.

BWell is committed to full student engagement in our work. For both our volunteer and paid positions, we actively recruit students who are interested in promoting health and wellness and committed to dismantling oppression and stigma and preventing harm. Positions do not require prior experience or participation unless specifically noted. BWell employs 50-70 students in any given semester.

For both volunteer and paid positions, follow BWell on Instagram to see when we are recruiting. Paid student positions are always posted in Workday when there are openings.
